Windows Modem Log Test
If Audio Caller ID is not reporting
caller ID information you can manually check to see if your modem is
receiving the caller ID information. This is accomplished by receiving a
phone call and then checking your modem's log in Windows. Follow these 4
steps:
- Make sure logging is
turned on for your modem. Go to "Control Panel / Phone and Modem
Options / Modems". Select your modem and
choose the "Properties" button and go
to the "Diagnostics" tab. Make sure
there is a check mark next to "Append to Log"
and then choose OK. (See
these instructions if your "Append to Log" is disabled)
- Start Audio Caller ID
and make sure it is says it is monitoring your
modem in its status bar (bottom left of the main
window).
- Wait for someone to
call you, or call yourself using a different
phone line.
- After you've received
a call go check your modem's log. Go back to the
same dialog box from step #1 and choose the
"View Log" button. See below for
instructions in interpreting the call log. There
are examples of working and not
working
modem logs below, as well as next
steps if
your modem is not receiving caller ID information.
If
your modem is receiving caller ID information you will
find DATE, TIME, NMBR,
and NAME strings in your call log. The
following log is from a working modem. See the section
hilighted in blue and
check to see that your log contains similar information.

If your modem is not receiving caller ID
information you will not see the DATE, TIME,
NMBR, or NAME strings.
Often you will see the rings of the phone, but not the
caller ID information. Below is a call log where the
modem is NOT receiving the caller ID information.

Even if your modem is not currently
receiving caller ID information it may still be possible
to fix it. Check to make sure your modem's caller ID
feature is enabled,
and then try the above 4 steps again.
If your modem is receiving
caller ID information, but it doesn't appear in Audio
Caller ID, then your modem driver is the problem. This
can be easily fixed by following these instructions.
