Do I have to leave Safe Data Backup running for the scheduled jobs to run?

No, not if you select "Windows Task Scheduler" as your scheduler when you create the backup configuration.  If you choose the "Internal" scheduler, then yes, you do need to leave Safe Data Backup running in order for the scheduled job to run.  For this reason, it is usually preferable to use the Windows Task Scheduler when scheduling your data backups.
